The Islands are situated on the edge of the North Atlantic Ocean, 28 miles off the western tip of Cornwall. Among dozens of uninhabited islands, just five are inhabited: Bryher, St Agnes, St Mary’s, St Martin’s and Tresco. Tresco is let by the Duchy of Cornwall as a private estate. Everyone living on Bryher, St Agnes and St Martin’s is a tenant of the Duchy. But on St Mary’s the Duchy has sold off much of its freehold property in Scilly’s ‘capital’ Hugh Town and outside the Garrison area, where the Duchy maintains its local headquarters. The resident population on the Islands is just over 2000. The mainstay of the local economy is tourism, supported by flower farming and fishing. |
